Dear LAUSD Employees:
In the past several days numerous SPAM emails have been received by LAUSD employees that contain an attachment with a virus. The source of this current SPAMMING has been investigated and we have determined that 174 computers were infected across the District, as of noon yesterday. ITD has also identified some 28,000 computers across the District that do not have the current release of Symantec's virus definition file that blocks this virus.
The SPAMMING will continue until we eradicate the virus and make sure all District computers are equipped with the latest update. We hope to complete these tasks by the end of this week.
This current virus does not cause any damage to your system but it sends massive number of emails to District e-mail users, using our own internal servers, which can slow down internal and external email delivery.
In the meantime, we urge everyone to please be alert about any suspicious e-mail and not to open the attachment and delete the email completely from your mailbox. Please go to http://servicedesk.lausd.net for more information on e-mail SPAM and how to protect your computer.
If you need assistance removing viruses from your computer, please contact ITD to place a service request. You can also place service requests online and avoid long hold times on the phone using the Self-Service and Support system at the Service Desk Support page - http://servicedesk.lausd.net <http://servicedesk.lausd.net/>"
