English 10A (Period 5) Assignments

Using clear, concise and compelling evidence, write a short essay in which you identify the intended audience of the article "Anyone Scoffing at 'Active Consent'..." Explain how the writer uses specific vocabulary and text structure to  convey message represented in the title of the article. 

 

In this task you are being asked to analyze the organization of the article.  It goes without saying that your paper must be well organized as well.

 

300-500 words. 

Using clear compelling evidence from the article read in class, write an essay which answers the following questions:  Exactly how does the bill described in the article change previous law?  To whom does the new standard apply? What are the stated goals of the supporters?  Do you support this change? Why or why not?

 

200-300 words, 5 ¶

Read and annotate Camille Paglia's essay "It's a Jungle Out There."

Using clear compelling evidence from Tom Junod's essay "The Terrible Boy," identify and explain the central theme of the piece, and show how the writer develops that theme through the structuring of various narratives.

 

750-1200 words, 8-10 ¶

Using clear compelling evidence from chapter 12 of You Can't Win, write a short essay in which you show how the author reveals his attitude toward intoxication.

 

200-250 words

Read through the end of chapter 8 of You Can't Win, then write a short essay on the following prompt:

 

Identify and explain the TONE that the author uses to describe his arrest and conviction in chapter 8.

 

150 or so words, 1-2 ¶

Create an evidence sheet from chapter six of You Can't Win in which you identify the the survival information that Jack learns from the bums, and the reason(s) he decides to leave them.  Be sure to include the page number and a brief explanation for each piece of evidence.

 

At least 7 items.

Read (and be prepared to discuss) up through page 72 in You Can't Win.

Create an evidence list from chapter five of You Can't Win that demonstrates the author's thoughts, feelings, and overall attitude toward women.  For each item, be sure to write the location (page number, paragraph number),  and then write a sentence or two (also for each piece of evidence) in which you explain what the evidence shows.

Use clear, compelling evidence from chapters 3 and 4 of You Can't Win to write a short essay which shows the experiences and events which lead Jack Black to choose the type of life that he chose.  Explain why those experiences meant so much to him, and speculate what might have been different in his life to change his point of view about his life goal.

 

170-200 words, 3¶

Read through chapter four of You Can't Win, and then create an evidence sheet which shows the events and experiences that the author says formed his choice of life direction.
