Extra-Credit Essay
Iwo Jima

DIRECTIONS:  You will have 45 minutes to plan and write an essay on the topic argued below.  Before you begin writing, read this passage carefully and plan what you will say.  Your essay should be as well organized and as carefully written as you can plan it.

I was ten years old when the war ended.  I thought the returning veterans were giants who had saved the world from barbarism.  I still think so.  I remain a hero worshipper.  Over the decades, I have interviewed thousands of veterans.  It is a privilege to hear their stories and write them up.

Heroes are used by the government to sell patriotism and support for the war effort.  The Iwo Jima “Heroes” Bond Tour raised $24 Billion for the US Treasury, more than any other bond tour.  Later, one of those “heroes” Ira Hayes would die a homeless, alcoholic -- a hero who was forgotten by the people for whom he fought.  This tragedy continues with the returning heroes from Korea, Vietnam and now Iraq.  The US Government needs to provide better support for all of its soldiers.

Steven Ambrose, Historian

Explain the author’s argument and discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with his/her views.  Support your position by referring to the passage and providing reasons and examples from your knowledge of the Battle of Iwo Jima and the 7th Bond Tour.
