DIRECTIONS: You will have 45 minutes to plan and write an essay on the topic argued below. Before you begin writing, read this passage carefully and plan what you will say. Your essay should be as well organized and as carefully written as you can plan it.
I was ten years old when the war ended. I thought the returning veterans were giants who had saved the world from barbarism. I still think so. I remain a hero worshipper. Over the decades, I have interviewed thousands of veterans. It is a privilege to hear their stories and write them up.
