A-G Requirements: What You Need to Know

If you’re planning to attend a California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC) school, you need to complete the A-G requirements in high school. These are a series of courses you must pass with a C or better to be eligible for admission.

What Are the A-G Requirements?

Each letter represents a subject area you need to complete:

  • A – History/Social Science (2 years)
  • B – English (4 years)
  • C – Mathematics (3 years, but 4 recommended)
  • D – Science (2 years, but 3 recommended)
  • E – Language Other Than English (2 years, but 3+ recommended)
  • F – Visual & Performing Arts (1 year)
  • G – College-Preparatory Elective (1 year)

Why Are A-G Requirements Important for You?

  • They keep your college options open by making you eligible for CSU and UC schools.
  • Even if you’re considering other colleges, these courses help prepare you for college-level work.
  • Taking more than the minimum (especially in math, science, and language) can boost your application

How Can You Stay on Track?

  • Work with your school counselor to make sure your classes meet A-G standards.
  • Keep your grades up—you need at least a C or better in these courses.
  • Consider taking honors, AP, or dual enrollment courses for an extra challenge.
