After many suggestions from teachers and discussion at the Lincoln Staff meetings, UTLA Steering Committee meetings, and Lincoln Legislature meetings, here is the current Lincoln High School Tardy Policy.
Tardy Policy
Step 1- Administrators and out of classroom personnel will clear the hallways at the beginning of class periods.
Step 2- Students will not be issued a blue slip to enter class, the TEACHER must enter students as tardy in ISIS in order to record the tardy. If the student comes in MORE than 20 minutes late, teachers can wait until the end of the period and record the time of the tardy (in other words, you do not need to stop your lesson and correct your attendance for every tardy student).
Step 3- In order to target tardy intervention to students who are chronically tardy, please turn the names of your chronically, severely tardy students into your SLC counselors and administrators.
Step 5- Counselors and administrators will run reports of chronically tardy students by SLC and will begin dealing with these students first by calling home and setting up parent-teacher-counselor conferences.
Step 6- We currently have a committee of administrators and teachers that will develop further consequences including mandatory parent conferences, a detention schedule for in school and afterschool detention (Academic Behavior Intervention), and logistics for our tardy intervention. SLCs should also refer to tardy plans they created in past years or new plans to help address tardiness.
Some things teachers can do to help mitigate tardies-
1. Start class promptly with silent reading, a quickwrite, a 2-3 question quick review of the previous class, journaling, textual annotation, or another "into" assignment.
2. Stand at the door and encourage students to be in class before the bell rings.
3. Take accurate attendance, and make sure to correct attendance for students who are tardy beyond the first 20 minutes or so of the period.
4. Turn the names of your chronically-tardy students into your SLC admin and counselors.
Good luck, Tigers! Let's be on time to class!
