As you are aware, California AB 537 states that public schools have a duty to protect students from discrimination and/or harassment on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. As the sponsor of the Gay-Straight Alliance, I hear stories regularly from Lincoln students who feel marginalized because of their perceived sexuality.
I'd like to invite you to advocate for our students in these ways:
1. Support our Ally Week efforts. Ally Week is October 19-24 this year. During this week, we ask students, teachers, and staff to commit to confronting those who use anti-LGBT language around us. Students in your classes may be passing around sign-ups and may wish to make announcements; please support them.
2. Help publicize our Annual Poster Contest. A flyer will be in your box shortly. Please post it and announce it to your students. If you can justify a curricular connection, you may even wish to make the poster an assignment or offer extra credit for it--art teachers, health, and life skills teachers, especially.
3. Confront anti-LGBT language when you hear it in your classroom. We don't tolerate racist remarks, nor should we tolerate any other form of prejudice.
4. Please send a short reply to this email to me (not the whole list) so that I can count you as one of our supporters and advocates.
