Algebra 1 (Period 5)
Course Description
Course objectives
Algebra 1A is the first semester of a 2 semester course in basic algebra concepts.
The objectives of this course are:
· To simplify and evaluate numerical expressions.
· To translate phrases into variable expressions.
· To translate simple word problems into equations.
· To graph and compare real numbers on a number line.
· To use the five step plan to solve word problems.
The base text for this course will be Algebra 1 Concepts, Skills and Problem Solving. Students will also be given homework assignments from Globe Pearsons’s Algebra 1. which will remain at home for the 2009 - 2010 school year
The following strategies will be used:
Students will respond to teacher directed lessons relating to standards
Students will complete teacher generated problems and assignments from their text.
Students will respond orally to drills of basic math computation
Students will be evaluated as to their readiness to move to the next level in Algebra.
Other supplemental material will be provided as needed per individual student needs.
Grading procedures
The students will receive grades based on points earned by participating in teacher directed activity and work samples. Students will be able to earn approximately 20 points per day. Total points at reporting periods will be assigned grades as follows:
A -- 90% of total points
B -- 80% of total points
C -- 70% of total points
D -- 60% of total points
F -- 50% of total points
Content standards for Algebra
1.0 Students identify and use the arithmetic properties of subsets of integers and rational, irrational and real numbers including closure properties for the four basic arithmetic operations where applicable.
3.0 Students solve equations and inequalities involving absolute values
4.0 Students simplify expressions before solving linier equations and equalities in one variable.
5.0 Students solve multi-step problems, including word problems, including linear equations and linear inequalities in one variable and provide justification for each step.
