Biology

Course Description Biology 2023-24

Welcome to Ms. Kwan’s Biology class. We will be focusing on methods to study biology, understanding biological processes, and exploring the diversity of living things. I want this class to enhance your critical and analytical thinking skills and reading skills.  I hope that you will find relevance in the subject matter as it relates to your own life experiences. In addition, I hope that this class would provide the opportunity for every student to develop his/her own voice and knowledgeable expression of science.  I hope that every student’s experience in this biology class provides him/her with a deeper understanding of science concepts and appreciation for the living world of which we are all a part of.

Grading:  Grades will consist of unit tests and quizzes, lab write-ups, projects, homework, and class participation.  The grade breakdown for each grading period are:

         A……..90% and up

         B……..80% and up

         C……..65% and up

         D……..55% and up

         Fail…..Less than 55%

Guidelines for Learning

  1. Assignments: We will take advantage of our in-person time to do labs, activities, and interactive lessons. Assignments will be posted on schoology and discussed in class where due dates are clearly stated. All assignments turned in are to be your original work and not copied or plagiarized as they will get no credit. They are to be turned in via schoology or physically with an interactive composition notebook. Platforms will be used to support lessons and are integrated into schoology. It is crucial to have your laptops in class to do your assignments. Discussions, materials, and announcements will be on schoology daily. We will be using multiple digital platforms to support our learning like: Schoology, CK12, HHMI, YouTube tutorials, HMH Textbook, Nearpod, Google Suite, Kami, Gizmos.
  2. NO CELL PHONE POLICY at Lincoln. All cell phones will be collected at the beginning of class in the box and returned at the end of class. Security will confiscate phones and parents will be contacted for return if you violate the school cell phone policy.
  3. Tardies and absences: Tardies will result in missing warm up points and important information for lessons and WILL affect your grade.  It is your responsibility to make up any missing work and keep updated via Schoology in a timely manner. There will be a maximum of three late assignments per 5 week grading period. Some assignments cannot be made up.  Talk to me prior to absent days, and I will be accommodating when possible.

  1. Participation: Don’t interrupt lessons but actively participate in them.  Be courteous, ask questions and comments that contribute to the lesson, and engage yourself. Show respect for each other and value your education by making the most out of your time.

  1. Contact information (room 701):

-The best way to contact me is via email : [email protected] and this is accessible in schoology messages.  I will respond within 24 class hours.

-Create a parent portal for schoology login at https://parentportalapp.lausd.net/parentaccess/

-Another good source of information is our Lincoln High School website: https://www.lincolnhs.org/

I look forward to working with you and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
